Hope

A3 Acrylics and watercolour painting

In this piece, I aimed to bring attention to the current situation in my home country and convey a sense of courage, unbreakable spirit and hope for a brighter future that the people in Ukraine have. Inspired by Ukrainian folk art, I used a range of vibrant colours which together create an uplifting feeling of happiness. However, with the use of a range of symbolic elements, the piece creates a subtle sinister feeling. One of the two hands in the painting is "inverted" -- in white and blue colours -- and is pointing towards a yellow flower, symbolising the Sun. It is a metaphorical image of the human hope for a happier and safer life. This utopian image is contrasted by the second hand, which is in the foreground. It is pointing towards a flock of black birds, which are a sinister symbol of misfortune, as if the person pointing towards them is trying to warn of a forthcoming disaster -- or a present one, like war. At the same time, a church in the bottom of the painting is showing the resiliense and faith in a better future that the people of Ukraine carry. The yellow bird, in contrast to the black ones in the background, conveys a hope for a new beginning.
